Narcissism remains one of the most prolific and misunderstood concepts in modern psychology. This often stigmatizing label leads to misidentifications and conflicts with people who do not present such such personality traits while missing those who do and require intervention. In a fascinating talk, Anthony Townsend attempts to analyze the narcissistic personality from a psychoanalytic perspective while comparing and contrasting this view with that portrayed in the DSM 5. A modern model for personality formulation is presented which amalgamates psychiatric diagnosis, psychoanalytic theory, attachment perspectives and modern neuroscience to guide treatment planning and forming a therapeutic relationship for this population. In-depth case studies are used to illustrate different approaches to the treatment of emotional concerns and behavioural patterns to widen the therapist’s tool kit in approaching those who manage their worlds through veils for vulnerabilities. This presentation will provide attendees with improved skills in the diagnosis of narcissism using multiple diagnostic manuals, improve assessment skills by addressing the use of standardized psychometric testing and also improve therapeutic skills by training on specific skills to treat emotional concerns and behavioural patterns relating to narcissism. It will also deepen the attendee’s knowledge of narcissistic personality traits and narcissistic personality disorder from psychiatric and psychoanalytic perspectives.
