In the 14 decades since Freud published his theory of psychoanalysis, the metaphorical leaps that he was forced to make due to the technological limitations of his age have been filled and much to his favour. In this intriguing presentation, Anthony Townsend explores the modern revisioning of Freudian psychoanalysis in Mark Solm’s modern revisioning of it with modern neuroscience. By exploring the core concepts of psychoanalysis and how biological and scientific data has enhanced our understanding of the human condition, Anthony presents a clinical model for practitioners to use in psychotherapy. The practice of psychoanalytic formulation of symptoms and personality as an alternative to DSM 5 is presented using in-depth case studies to enhance therapists skills in moving from the “what” to the “why” of psychopathology to provide more in-depth means of treatment planning. A needs-based model for therapy and emotional regulation rooted in psychoanalysis is presented to provide a means of helping clients live more fulfilling lives as they continue the process of ‘working though’. This presentation aims to enhance professional performance of therapists by deepening their knowledge of key psychoanalytic concepts, supplementing their current knowledge with advanced concepts from neuropsychoanalysis to provide a biological basis for therapeutic work, will employ case studies to improve their skills in inferential formulation (beyond descriptive diagnosis) as well as provide concepts and techniques (free-association and interpretation) to improve their therapeutic work using insight-oriented therapies.
