This seminar explores the clinical and neuropsychological features of autistic spectrum disorder with the aim of presenting an integrated model of ASD that debunks the mystified aspects of this syndrome such as the controversial vaccine theory and the age-old fallacy of ‘refrigerator mothers’ while also foregrounding distinctive clinical features of this enigmatic diagnosis such as restricted behavioral interests, sensory overload and impaired social functioning. Through an intriguing differential diagnosis, neurotypical and autistic brain physiology are compared and contrasted to reveal mirror neurons and cerebral lateralization as key aspects of the biological basis of empathy and the absence of a ‘theory of mind’ at the core of ASD. Drawing upon in-depth case studies from his own clinical experience, the importance of individualized treatment is highlighted by synthesizing recent therapeutic advances in cognitive-behavioral, neuropsychological and psychoanalytic literature to illustrate the value of blending behavioral modification with empathy building techniques. Moreover, a rare glimpse is offered into the therapeutic nuances of couples therapy for individuals diagnosed with ASDs with a specific focus on the controversial notions of matched pathology and gendered disorders in order to explicate the value of treatment in adulthood. By investigating the unique features of a diagnosis rooted in misunderstanding social relationships, strategies are offered for bridging the literal and metaphorical gaps in communication and, in so doing, the opportunity is presented to learn to speak the same social language and create possibilities for enhancing our understanding of those of us living in translation.
