As mental health clinicians, we are expected to provide services that are evidence-based. The question then becomes how to offer interventions based on scientific principles that are also responsive to the unique needs of our clients. In this seminar, we will look at how to obtain valid guidelines to addresses the presenting problems of our clients. There will also be a focus on the known components of therapeutic engagements that are necessary to bring about change in our clients. We will explore how available research findings can be integrated with clinical expertise to shape interventions that take the client’s level of readiness into account. All therapeutic engagements need to happen in deliberation with our clients, and ways of gaining feedback and assessing clients’ progress will be discussed. The information will be illustrated at the hand of case studies that reflect the challenges that often occur when delivering mental health services.
