According to the latest prevalence rate, 8.1% of South Africans meet the criteria for anxiety disorders, and with all the disruption brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, this number is sure to increase. People who live with anxiety often adopt a pattern of avoidance in an effort to prevent anxiety. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is regarded as a a third wave of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which offers an alternative to experiential avoidance. The hallmark of ACT is the creation of psychological flexibility instead of behavioural rigidity. There is a growing body of evidence that supports the efficacy of ACT in multiple settings as a transdiagnostic approach, including the treatment of anxiety disorders. The seminar will focus on six core therapeutic processes together with experiential exercises and case studies to illustrate the application of ACT for anxiety presentations. Provided the prevalence of anxiety disorders in the general population, practitioners need to be equipped with the latest research findings to understand these presentations in their clients. ACT offers a pragmatic and evidence-based framework to facilitate interventions that can alleviate the distress caused by anxiety. Attendees will receive the opportunity to familiarize themselves with exercises that can be applied to facilitate six processes in therapeutic interventions.
