Neurological, mental, developmental, and substance use (NMDS) disorders are a significant public health issue, particularly in less developed regions like South Africa. While neuropsychological intervention/rehabilitation is well-established in many high-income countries, where its role in addressing the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial effects of NMDS disorders is widely recognized, this is not the case in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including South Africa. In these regions,
neuropsychological intervention/rehabilitation services are either largely absent or still in development. The substantial impact of NMDS disorders on the burden of disease in LMICs highlights the urgent need for neuropsychological intervention/rehabilitation services, especially given the significant treatment gaps that reflect broader health sector neglect, violating the fundamental human right to health. Social justice and human rights concerns are further exacerbated by the fact that existing services often rely on research
conducted in resource-rich, predominantly Western environments, making their application to low-resource and culturally diverse contexts often unsuitable.
