In this relevant and interactive workshop by esteemed professor, Ricky Snyders, an introduction to, and skills training in, the provocative therapy of rigid family systems and symptomatic presentations by family members will be provided. Content to be covered in this workshop includes:

  • Education of the therapist as choreographer of the therapeutic system;
  • Demonstrations and role play practice of the skills introduced;
  • Enhancing self-reflection of the therapist; and
  • The ethics of provocative family therapy: Second-order cybernetics.

Upon completion of the workshop, delegates will be able to construct a workable and ethical therapeutic system, by attending to and developing skills at:

  • Entering family therapy with a working image and theory in their minds;
  • Taking care of issues of referral and initial contact with the family;
  • Engaging in hypothesising and planning of the therapeutic process;
  • Conducting a first and subsequent sessions of therapy;
  • Making intersession analyses; arranging follow-up sessions, and termination of therapy;
  • Selecting and reading appropriate literature sources and codes of professional ethics; and
  • Self-reflection and understanding of own biases and contributions to processes.
